Getting started

Turn on auto-capture

Have Pastree save what you copy on web pages. Here’s what it keeps, what it skips, and how to turn it off.

What it saves

Auto-capture is off until you turn it on. Once it’s on, Pastree saves:

  • Text you copy or paste on a web page.
  • What’s on your clipboard when you open the panel, even if you copied it in another app.

It doesn’t save copies on pages Pastree can’t work on, such as store pages and your browser’s own pages. Copies you make in other apps aren’t saved as you make them: Pastree only sees what’s on your clipboard when you open the panel. And Exclude passwords leaves out more, as explained below.

Turn it on

  1. 1
Open the panel and turn on the Auto-capture switch in its footer. It’s in Settings too.
  2. 2
Your browser asks to let Pastree access all websites. Allow it.
  3. 3
Copy some text on a web page. It appears in the Clipboard tab.

Why Pastree asks for access to all websites.

It needs that access to notice what you copy on the pages you visit. What it saves stays in your browser, on your device: Pastree has no servers, and nothing leaves your device unless you paste or attach it somewhere. If you decline, auto-capture stays off.

What it leaves out

Exclude passwords is on by default. With it on, auto-capture skips anything pasted into password, payment-card and one-time-code fields, and text that looks like a password, a private key, a token, an API key, a card number or a US Social Security number.

It checks for common formats, so it can miss some. Keep secrets out of Pastree, and leave Exclude passwords on. It’s in Settings, below Auto-capture.

Turn it off

Turn off the same Auto-capture switch. Taking away Pastree’s access to websites, in your browser’s extension settings, turns it off too.

Want a key for it? Turning auto-capture on or off has no shortcut until you give it one. In Settings › Keyboard Shortcuts, choose Manage Shortcuts and set one on your browser’s page.

Good to know

  • Your history keeps 100 items by default. With auto-capture on it fills faster, and past the limit the oldest items go first, starred ones included. You can set the limit from 10 to 1,000 in Settings (more in History limits & retention).
  • New items take any free shortcut items in turn, so if shortcut items 2 and 3 are free, your next copies take them. To choose them yourself, turn on Make a shortcut when you add an item.
  • Auto-delete can clear your history when the browser closes, or after 7, 30 or 90 days. It never removes starred items or lists.

If nothing is saved

Check that the Auto-capture switch is on, and that Pastree still has access to websites in your browser’s extension settings. Try an ordinary web page, since store pages and your browser’s own pages are off limits. If the text looked like a password, a key or a card number, Exclude passwords skipped it.
