Getting started

Save your first item and use it again

Save a piece of text you type often, then paste it back without retyping it.

Before you start

  • Pastree is installed and open. If it isn’t, start with Install Pastree and open the panel.
  • You have a piece of text you type often, such as a sign-off or a reply you send every week.

Save it with +

  1. 1
In the panel, choose + (Add Item).
  2. 2
Type your text, or choose Paste from clipboard.
  3. 3
Choose Add Item. Your text appears in the Clipboard tab.

New items take shortcut items 1, 2 and 3 in turn, until all three are taken, so your first item is shortcut item 1. To pick an item’s shortcut yourself, turn on Make a shortcut in the same dialog.

Or save it from a page

  1. 1
Select the text on the page.
  2. 2
Right-click it and choose Pastree › Save clipboard to Pastree.
  3. 3
The page shows “Saved to Pastree”.

With nothing selected, it saves what’s on your clipboard. It works with auto-capture off, and even on pages Pastree can’t otherwise work on, such as a store page, as long as you’ve selected the text.

Use it again

With its shortcut. Click into a text field on a page and press ⌃⇧U (Alt+I on Windows). Shortcut item 1 goes in without opening Pastree.

From the panel. Click into the text field first, then choose Paste item on your item. Copy item puts it on your clipboard instead, to paste anywhere.

From the right-click menu. Right-click in a text field and choose Pastree, then your item. Shortcut items sit at the top of the menu, and Clipboard lists your 10 newest.

The first time you paste from the panel, Pastree may ask for access.

It asks once, for access to all websites, unless you’ve already allowed it. The shortcut keys and the right-click menu work without it. You can take it away in your browser’s extension settings.

If nothing was saved

Saved nothing from the right-click menu? Exclude passwords, on by default, skips text that looks like a password, a key, a token, a card number or a US Social Security number, and text in password, payment-card and one-time-code fields. It checks for common formats, so it can miss some: keep secrets out of Pastree.

Still need a hand? Try troubleshooting or prepare a bug report.

Tips

  • Clicking an item selects it; it doesn’t copy it. Use Copy item or Paste item.
  • Star it, and ⌥F (Alt+F on Windows) shows just your starred items.
  • To change the text, use Edit item.
  • Keep snippets that belong together in a list.
