Back up, move and clear your data
See where your Pastree data lives, then back it up, move it to another computer, or clear it.
Where your data lives
Everything Pastree saves stays in your browser, on this computer. Pastree adds no encryption of its own, so anyone who can use your browser profile can see it.
Only four settings sync through your browser: the history limit, auto-capture, Exclude passwords and auto-delete. What you save never syncs, and removing Pastree deletes its data from this computer. So a backup is worth having.
Export a backup
- 1Open Settings, and find the Data Management card.
- 2Choose Export Data, or press ⌃E (Ctrl+E on Windows) inside Pastree.
- 3Pastree saves a .json file named pastree-backup, followed by the date and time.
The backup holds your clipboard history, with the address and title of the page each item came from, your lists and your settings. It doesn’t hold your files or your prompts.
Keep the backup somewhere you trust.
Prompts and files
Export your prompts one at a time, as a .txt, .md or .json file, from each prompt’s sharing options. See Reusable prompts.
Your backup doesn’t include files, so keep the original of each one somewhere outside Pastree. See Files & attachments.
Import a backup
- 1Open Settings › Data Management and choose Import Data, or press ⌃I (Ctrl+I on Windows) inside Pastree.
- 2Choose your backup file.
- 3Choose how to bring it in, then choose Import Data.
- Replace all data, the default: your history, lists and settings become the backup’s.
- Merge with existing data: adds the items and lists you don’t already have, and keeps your settings.
- Append to existing data: adds everything in the backup, even what you already have, and keeps your settings.
Create backup before importing is on, so Pastree saves a backup of what you have now first.
Move to another computer
Export a backup on your old computer, then import it on the new one. Move your prompts one at a time the same way, and add your files again from their originals.
Clear All Data
- 1Open Settings › Data Management and choose Clear All Data.
- 2Choose what to delete: Clipboard (starred items included), Lists, Files or Prompts.
- 3Choose Clear.
Your settings are kept. Clear All Data has no key until you give it one; see Keyboard shortcuts.
Clearing can’t be undone.
Reset your settings
Reset to Default Settings, in the same card, puts every setting back the way it started. It doesn’t touch anything you’ve saved.
