Getting started

Install Pastree and open the panel

Add Pastree to Chrome, Firefox or Brave on your computer, then open it beside the page you’re working on.

Before you start

  • You’re on a computer. Pastree isn’t available for phones.
  • You use Chrome 116 or later, Firefox 140 or later, or Brave.
  • There’s nothing to sign up for: Pastree is free, with no account.

Adding Pastree doesn’t give it access to all websites.

That access is optional. Pastree asks for it only if you turn on auto-capture, or when pasting or attaching from the panel needs it. The keyboard shortcuts and the right-click menu work without it.

Install in Chrome

Available in the Chrome Web Store
  1. 1
  2. 2
Choose Add to Chrome, then confirm when Chrome asks.
  3. 3
If the Pastree icon isn’t in your toolbar, open the Extensions menu (the puzzle piece) and pin Pastree.

Install in Firefox

Get the add-on for Firefox
  1. 1
  2. 2
Choose Add to Firefox, then confirm when Firefox asks.
  3. 3
If the Pastree icon isn’t in your toolbar, open the Extensions menu (the puzzle piece) and pin Pastree.

Firefox Add-ons notes that Mozilla doesn’t actively monitor Pastree. Mozilla shows that notice on every extension its staff don’t regularly review, as its guide to add-on badges explains.

Install in Brave

Available in the Chrome Web Store

Brave runs the Chrome version of Pastree, so you add it from the Chrome Web Store.

  1. 1
  2. 2
Choose Add to Brave, then confirm when Brave asks.
  3. 3
If the Pastree icon isn’t in your toolbar, open the Extensions menu (the puzzle piece) and pin Pastree.

Brave notes that it doesn’t review extensions for security. It shows that for every extension from the Chrome Web Store, and its guide to extensions explains why.

Open the panel

Pastree doesn’t open by itself after you add it. Click the Pastree icon in your toolbar, or press ⌃⇧V (Alt+Shift+V on Windows). You can also right-click on a page and choose Pastree › Open Pastree.

In Chrome and Brave, Pastree opens in the side panel. In Firefox, it opens in the sidebar. Press ⌃⇧V (Alt+Shift+V on Windows) again to close it.

The panel has four tabs: Clipboard, List, Files and Prompts. The footer shows how many items you’ve saved, the gear that opens Settings, and the Auto-capture switch, which stays off until you turn it on.

Click inside the panel before you type.

Opening Pastree with the keys doesn’t move your keyboard into it: browsers don’t let an extension take focus. Once you’ve clicked in, ⌥1 – ⌥5 (Alt+1 – Alt+5 on Windows) switches tabs and ⌥H (Alt+H on Windows) shows every shortcut.

Try it on an ordinary web page.

Just after installing, you’re still on the store’s page. The panel opens there, but browsers don’t let extensions work on store pages or on their own pages, such as settings, so Pastree can’t capture, paste or attach on them.

If the panel doesn’t open

Can’t find the icon? Until you pin it, Pastree waits in the Extensions menu (the puzzle piece) in your toolbar.

The keys do nothing? In Firefox on a Mac, ⌃⇧V doesn’t work while you’re typing in a text field, because macOS uses those keys to move the cursor. Click outside the field first, or use the icon. Anywhere else, open Pastree from the icon and check Settings › Keyboard Shortcuts: it shows the keys your browser has given Pastree, and Manage Shortcuts lets you change them.

Still nothing? Check your browser’s version. Pastree needs Chrome 116 or later, or Firefox 140 or later.

Still need a hand? Try troubleshooting or prepare a bug report.
